My fiance and I are committed to paying cash for our entire wedding. I have already mentioned looking at the possibility of putting a tux on layaway to make this happen. Yesterday, she and I went and looked wedding dresses at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. One of the three was beautiful and would really need to altered a lot to fit her (as any dress we looked at would). The problem is the store was selling any one of the dresses for $200. Even the crummiest one that looks like it has a stain on it. On the other hand a new dress at David's Bridal start at $249. Would buying a used one for almost the same price as a new one, really be economical? Besides, the alterations for her should be included, if we went the new route. Still though, there might be someplace to find a used one much cheaper then those at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop.

try freecycle, it is worth a try, maybe someone no longer wants there dress. I gave mine away long ago.
Try ebay as well. Ask around, maybe someone you know can do alterations for bartering?
And although I totally agree no debt is the way to go, you have to live too. Don't add new debt, but if you wait until all your and her debt is clear you may never get married.
Sometimes I have to spend and I figure it out later. I do not have any debt and I have savings, but my monthly budget is really tight. Right now I need $200 more to make it through Oct. (without touching my savings) I had to buy a few things that were not budgeted for.
Now I am trying to sell stuff around the house to come up with that money.
My point, I want you to enjoy your wedding day (not at the expense of your future children) but you have to spend some money.
If a $300 dress makes her happy, do it. Many people spend thousands on a wedding dress. That is a bit extreme. $300 not so much.
You could try borrowing one from a family member or friend. Some will even just give you a gown.
Try shopping online for discount wedding dresses. Buy a used wedding dress from the classifieds. There are so many ways you can get an affordable wedding dress.
There are dresses out there new and used to fit everyone's budget!
Try sites that sell used wedding dresses like www.smartbrideboutique.com. They have brand new or gently used dresses for even under $200 that would look much nicer than ones you would find at a Thrift Store. Happy searching!
