During a job interview, this IT pilot fish is surprised to be told that one reason he made the short list was the excellent cover letter he included with his resume.

“The interview went very well,” says fish, “at least up until the point where I said I enjoyed learning new tools — the one they used at this IT shop was new to me — and the interviewer said, ‘Oh, you’re just a tinkerer.’

“When I got back home, with a nagging feeling I had blown the interview, I went to my PC and opened the cover letter I sent them that they found so intriguing.

“All it said was:

Dear Sir or Madame,

I am writing to you about the Software Engineer position you posted in the Daily Times.
