Why Tech Can’t Help Donald Trump and Most CEOs

The new president is making almost the identical mistake President Obama made during his first two years. Trump has picked a major entitlement to hang his hat on — the same major entitlement, healthcare — and shortly will discover what most CIOs know: You don’t mess with anything that touches everybody. The likely outcome will be that like Obama, Trump will lose the house in the next election.

Mobile World Congress: Gigabit Wireless and the Anti-iPhone Set

One of the biggest disappointments at this year’s Mobile World Congress is that the Samsung Galaxy 8 phone won’t make it. The Galaxy line has been the ultimate iPhone fighter. Rumors around the anniversary edition of the iPhone suggest that it will do amazing, magical things, like 3D selfies. OK, I’m really missing Steve Jobs at the moment — who the hell wants 3D selfies?!?

Tesla Goes Underground and Uber Takes to the Skies: The Birth of Magic

As in crazy short, in a very short period of time we have two very different companies looking at two very different ways to eliminate traffic. Tesla wants to tunnel under the ground to avoid traffic, while Uber wants to fly overhead. Transportation has been a tad static for the last 40 years or so, and that apparently is about to change big time. This is just the start.

Was Apple’s Outstanding Q1 a Fluke?

Apple had a good quarter, but if you look under the numbers there is a ton of trouble. It just dropped behind Google in brand value, and valuation may crater in a few months. The iPhone 7 did well, but that shouldn’t be a surprise, given that its biggest competitor, Samsung, saw its phone literally go up in flames last quarter. The Galaxy 8 is coming, though, and it looks really impressive.

BlackBerry, Microsoft and the Ever-Smarter Connected Car

BlackBerry last week announced that its turnaround was finished, and Microsoft finally provided some information on its new connected car deliverables. One strange thing was that after CEO John Chen excitedly pointed out that BlackBerry had displaced Microsoft in Ford, he then announced a strategic initiative to work more closely with Microsoft on BlackBerry’s own market-leading QNX car OS.

The US Press Corps vs. Trump: A Teachable Moment

Life is about negotiation. We negotiate our relationships — including marriage, which is a contract that many don’t take seriously. We negotiate our jobs, and we negotiate our interactions with our families. Those who are good at this tend to have relatively happy lives. While they don’t get everything they might want, they get more than most. When things degrade into wars, both sides lose.

Did BuzzFeed Just Commit Suicide?

Remember the oldie, “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”? The chorus goes like this: “You don’t tug on superman’s cape, You don’t spit into the wind, You don’t pull the mask off that old lone ranger, And you don’t mess around with Jim.” One of the lessons we learned last year is that what goes for “Jim” likely also goes for Peter Thiel, who is one of President-elect Donald Trump’s leading supporters.

CES 2017’s Magic

CES was a fascinating show this year. One of the things that made it so fascinating was that everyone and their brother had cars demonstrating one form of technology or another. It kind of makes me wonder what we’ll see at the next car show — PCs, drones, tablets and smartphones? That wasn’t the only surprise at the show, though. Nvidia, long thought of as living in Intel’s shadow, broke out.

How to deal with a manager who hates you

Last week I discussed 15 ways to not get fired from your dream job and I actually got a decent amount of thank you email. One email, however, got me thinking. It was from a guy who was not getting along with his manager — and man I’ve been there. I had this one manager who was a nightmare and I kind of went a little off the rails myself. Now when I spoke to others who had worked for him, something I should have done before I took the job, I found that not only wasn’t he a good manager, he was harsh to employees who aggressively wanted to advance, particularly if they were women.

Why you shouldn’t trust cloud service providers

Simply stated, you can’t trust the employees of cloud service providers. Frankly, I don’t think we can really trust our own employees anymore either, but at least our capability to monitor them is far greater. Early on we had warnings of the problem of just anyone having access to secure data when Google Engineers got caught stalking Google customers through their access. Their getting caught and our finding out about it was pretty remote. I’ve seen, over the years, crimes ranging from theft to sabotage that result in the employee’s termination when caught, but never result in any external report.
